Beyond just the “you have to love yourself” cliche, there’s a pervasive attitude that if you have a mental illness you need to “work on yourself first” or “sort out your own shit” or whatever before you try dating. Basically we are supposed to be perfect or we’re not allowed to experience romantic love? Honestly a lot of mental illnesses aren’t even curable, you just learn to work around it, so that might be forever.

I refuse to deny myself the chance at relationships that enhance my life just because I’m not normal.

Well said. If I held back on love I would probably be dead now. Love is as essential to mental health as food and water is to physical health.
