did they ever actually say what Luis’s last name is? like, do we know he’s not Luis Garcia y Barnes? this doesn’t even have to be some shitty dark headcanon involving experimentation by hydra on immigrants, Bucky had sisters.
Please, God, somebody write the transcript of Luis spending seventeen minutes telling Bucky his grandfather’s life story through WWII and up to the point where he fell hard for this one hot chick from Brooklyn and like brought her back to California with him, man – and Bucky sits there the whole time in silence, too bewildered to interrupt.
What I love about this is its acknowledgment that Jason had no intentions at all
this is all 100% true but it always made me really mad that Chidi’s “crime” was having a severe anxiety disorder like he needed understanding and therapy, sending him to the Bad Place for something he had literally no control over was incredibly fucked up
I feel like a less-surface theme of the show is that they’re all in a situation where they have been forced into bad patterns by forces outside their control – Chidi has SEVERE anxiety; Eleanor was forced by abuse and neglect to adopt a self-centered attitude from early childhood and, like many people with traumatic pasts, responds by not dealing with difficult emotions; Jason was very overtly raised in an environment where he got no education and all his models for behaviour were criminal and/or self-destructive; and Tahani has been raised in an environment where everything is performative and she is shot down for any genuine expression of unhappiness or non-material want. Just as Michael and Janet are made one way but changed by their experiences, the moral of the story is that things outside your control shape you but you can move away from them. That could easily be really insulting, in a sort of ‘just get over it’ way, but the idea isn’t that they change solely because they decide to be better – all six of them change because their circumstances change and give them the OPPORTUNITY to be better, because they’re finally given the support system they lack.
I like The Good Place because the whole show has since day 1 been predicated on the idea that black and white moral judgements made in a vacuum are bullshit, and that moral choices are informed by things outside our control, whether that be education, behaviour modelling, unfair treatment or mental health issues. That doesn’t mean we aren’t responsible for our actions but it DOES mean we have to understand morality in the context of people’s varied experiences AND asks for the possibility that if their environment is improved, their ability to function as moral agents also improves.
Decades earlier, another Sears executive engaged in activism of a different sort. Julius Rosenwald began promoting civil rights causes while he was still president of Sears, before he became its chairman in 1924, leading some to call him the “first social justice philanthropist.” He helped fund fellowships for black artists and academics, including W.E.B. Du Bois and James Baldwin. He worked with Booker T. Washington to open more than 5,300 schools for black children in the Jim Crow South. Some of them were burned down by the Ku Klux Klan.

“The alliance between Rosenwald, the YMCA, and African-Americans
seems rather peculiar at first glance. Why would a Jew support
the establishment of Christian facilities for African-Americans? David
Levering Lewis, who examined the collaboration between AfricanAmericans
and Jews during the 1910s and 1920s~ has suggested that
some of the wealthy Jews who aided African-Americans had ulterior
motives. According to Lewis, they reasoned that their assistance to
the African-American struggle for racial advancement would spare
Jews “some of the necessity of directly rebutting anti-Semitic stereotypes,”
for white America would perforce conclude that if “blacks
could make good citizens…all other groups [including Jews] could
make better ones.” Yet Lewis’s highly interpretive study offers no
evidence to support this contention.
Julius Rosenwald certainly never said that his support of AfricanAmerican
causes was stimulated by a desire to refute anti-Semitic
stereotypes. On the contrary, Rosenwald claimed that he was motivated
by sympathy for the victims of discrimination. Having experienced
the indignity of anti-Semitism, he felt compassion for those
who suffered from racism.

I would love to see this movie or story. A creepy looking android that gained sentience and on the run decides to adopt this weird tiny abandoned android which is a haunted doll. They have some cute adventures where the android is all protective and caring to their new friend in their own way and the doll is trying to teach this giant doll how to use his ghost powers in that body and murdering people who pose a threat to them. Maybe complaining about how technologically advanced has changed the world so much and how they feel lost in it despite being here for so long. At best the android thinks the doll is talking about becoming obsolite, and at worst (but funnier) they think the doll is saying how they are literally lost and tells them they have gps so they can take them to where they want to go and the doll is just like this dumb new haunted doll…I gotta protect and nurture it before it dies from it’s naivette. Meanwhile an excorsist and some retrieval squad are tracking them down and they argue about what they’re going up against. Most of the retrieval squad don’t believe in the supernatural and thinks they found another defective android and the excorsist doesn’t understand technology that great so just assumes he’s dealing with two possessed items.
