This search for niche groups led Subaru to the 3rd rail of marketing: They discovered that lesbians loved their cars. Lesbians liked their dependability and size, and even the name “Subaru.” They were four times more likely than the average consumer to buy a Subaru. […] Subaru decided to launch an ad campaign focused on lesbian customers. It was such an unusual decision—and such a success—that it pushed gay and lesbian advertising from the fringes to the mainstream.
If you’ve ever wondered why people joke about lesbians driving Subarus, the reason is not just that lesbians like Subarus. It’s that Subaru cultivated its image as a car for lesbians—and did so at a time when few companies would embrace or even acknowledge their gay customers.
How is that ad picture marketing towards lesbians?
How is it not?
I mean it’s just two cars with sports gear on top of them am I missing something?
Wait nvm the car on the right has a gay pride flag sticker on it is that it?
There’s subtler stuff too. The two bikes are identical, not different sizes or frame styles, suggesting a same sex couple *if* you’re tuned in to that kind of thing. “Camp Out” is probably a pun on the outdoorsy meaning and the LG meanings of one or both constituent words, in context of the sticker. And the other license plate says “Xena Lover”, with Xena: Warrior Princess being legit #GayCulture of the era.
Oh, and the actual slogan itself– “different roads” alludes tongue-in-cheek to an old euphemism for lesbians.
my favorite scp is the joke scp that makes everything it comes into contact with unnecessarily verbose because one of the reported incidents was a copy of atlas shrugged that, before infection, was a sticky note that said “I HATE POOR PEOPLE”
Pointless LOTR headcanon of the day: Frodo & Merry both take after their mothers, meaning Frodo looks more like a Brandybuck than a Baggins and Merry looks more like a Took. This is a constant source of petty contention.
(Pippin meanwhile absolutely takes after his father & is the most Tookish looking)
Merry: call me a Took one more time
Gandalf: if it looks like a Took and acts like a Took it’s a Took
Merry: I will END you
Gandalf is the only nonhobbit in the fellowship who understands the minutiae of Took Vs Brandybuck Vs Baggins rivalry & he delights in it, everyone else baffled
Frodo: look it’s perfectly simple. The Brandybucks don’t like the Tooks because they play golf and think they’re better than everyone because they occasionally go on adventures. The Tooks don’t like the Brandybucks because they live on the wrong side of the river and like boats. And nobody likes the Bagginses because they’re annoying.
Aragorn: are you… Including yourself in that
Frodo: I said what I said.
Frodo: now the Bagginses don’t like the Brandybucks OR the Tooks because they’re highly disrepectable but also richer than they are. And as far as a lot of the Bagginses are concerned I’m a Brandybuck because I grew up in Buckland and I have the Brandybuck Profile
Merry: which just means he’s not pug-ugly
Frodo: quite.
Aragorn: this is all ridiculous. Keep going.
Gandalf: Hm now I wouldn’t say UGLY but… every Baggins I’ve ever met has been perfectly Round or perfectly Square… There is no middle ground.
Gimli, baffled: Frodo isn’t round OR square
Merry: that’s because he has the Brandybuck profile
Gimli: so… Is he a Brandybuck…
Merry: ABSOLUTE not
Frodo: slander!! I’m a Baggins how dare you
Pippin: was your father a Round Baggins or a Square Baggins
Frodo: my father… Was the ROUNDEST Baggins who ever lived… A perfect Sphere of hobbit…
Headcanon: I can muster a cogent argument for why it would make more sense or make for a better story if this were the case
Heartcanon: I don’t have a particular rationale for why this ought to be the case, I just like to imagine it’s true because it gives me the warm fuzzies
Gutcanon: it’s not that I actively want this to be the case – it just unaccountably feels like it should be
Junkcanon: I like to imagine it’s true because it gives me the other kind of warm fuzzies
Spleencanon: I insist that this is the case specifically to spite the author, because, like, fuck you, sir or madam
character being all “you expect me to do X?” Gilligan Cut to character doing X
the squad gets captured and interrogated separately, and they’re all telling equally terrible, completely contradictory lies
people completely missing the completely unsubtle, very visible dangerous thing in the room with them
alternatively, people absolutely seeing the completely unsubtle, very visible dangerous thing in the room with them and just not giving a shit
bonus points if it’s a beleaguered minimum wage employee who just goes about their business like “yep same shit as always”
someone pretending they don’t know another character is eavesdropping, only to casually reveal at the end of the scene that they know (*leaving* “tell tom that he can come out now” *tom drops from the ceiling in spy gear, irritated*)
choosing to deal with the villain by just leaving them alone in a room with another character
the “hands go down” trope
example: “any questions?” *everyone’s hands go up* “…that AREN’T sarcastic?” *everyone’s hands go down*
how could all y’all forget “ACT NATURAL!”
These are all great but let’s not forget two characters giving extremely biased flashbacks to the same event that each paint the other as an incompetent loon
i would like to respectfully add: scenes where a character walks into a room, sees something scary, and turns around and walks out with no reaction or change of expression
i keep seeing people bring up the whole “but chara laughed when asgore got sick from eating the flowers” when saying they’re evil/irredeemably so, but can i just….
“You laugh, and keep laughing. It’s SO funny, you can’t stop. Tears run down your face. … what? You didn’t do that?”
you get this during the fight with snowy’s mom…. kinda seems like chara laughs when they’re upset/disturbed. at least that’s how i interpret it????
this is totally valid because a lot of people may laugh in distressing situations and that’s a big coping mechanism. for someone like Chara, who is heavily implied to have been abused by the humans, this may be a coping mechanism and most likely laughed because “oh hahahaa you fucked up again oh my god look at that!! hahahah!!!” and this is actually not as uncommonas peoplemay think and the reality is is that people do it all the time. we even do it when we get hurt (like falling and scraping your knee– it hurts but you’re laughing and it’s not funny).
i wanna emphasize on the point with Snowy’s mother. this part of the game, this specific “battle” is probably one of the saddest in the entire game. her “battle” isn’t even a real battle. her attacks all fall to the bottom of the box, or just move over you slowly, using like 1-5 bullets. it’s slow and really depressing. they’re more like tears. she looks lonely, really sad, and tired. during the battle, she calls her son’s name multiple times. the music is eerie and really upsetting. chara and frisk are both really disturbed by this fight (and the True Lab in general) and if you pick Laugh the first time it says “You laugh, and keep laughing. It’s SO funny, you can’t stop. Tears run down your face….what? You didn’t do that?” as if Chara is surprised that Frisk didn’t react that way. if you pick laugh again, they say, “But it wasn’t funny.” a flat response.
when Asriel and Chara poisoned Asgore, it really seems like an innocent mistake. these are two kids who wanna make something for their dad, but there was no more butter. so they did the next best thing, right? they put in an ingredient that sounds almost the same. “buttercups” instead of “cups of butter”. like these are kids who made a mistake, and Asriel showed distress while Chara showed distress in a different way.
other than that there is really nothing else that suggests that Chara hated any of the Dreemurrs. sure Asriel says that they “weren’t the nicest person” but by no means were they evil. like they say that into comparison with Frisk who is literally the epitome of kindness in the game. even Monster Kid says that Undyne isn’t really all that nice, and they like Papyrus instead now. we still love Undyne though. and even though Asriel says that about Chara, he still loves them. he stays with them in the end. Chara’s memories of love for Asriel are what saved Asriel. Chara did love the Dreemurrs, and for them to laugh at this accident sounds more like “they gave me everything and i fucked up so badly hahaah oh fuck oh fuck” and in the end they use that knowledge of the flowers to kill themselves in a slow, gruesome, and horribly painful way. like it’s just horrible.
Chara did take after the Dreemurrs. they take after Toriel in their speech patterns a lot, made the Mr Dad Guy sweater for Asgore, describe the Worn Dagger as a gardening tool instead of a weapon in pacifist (most likely enjoyed gardening, perhaps with Asgore), most likely made that macaroni flower picture for (as it was their favorite flower), Asgore still drinks golden flower tea, and both Toriel and Asgore take care of their favorite flower (Toriel even burying them under it). Asriel was desperate to keep you around because they thought you were Chara. through Chara’s memories it was very obvious they loved the Dreemurrs.
i really really really really doubt that the poisoning was out of malice.
