D4 Long Rest Encounters

Not everything that approaches camp is trying to kill the characters. There are encounters that the character on watch may let their companions sleep through.

Roll on the table for your encounter in the night.

1) Pixie Mischief: A pixie sneaks into camp to paint one of the sleeping characters faces. Their magical pigments are permanent until the next new moon. The pixie does not try to hide from anyone on guard.

2) Flight of Light:A flight of migratory butterflies known as the starlight glisten overhead in the moonlight. Those that gaze upon it are filled with inspiration.

3) Satyr’s Lullaby: The person on guard hears a satyr playing its pan pipes before seeing it. The satyr is playing a comforting lullaby that seems to sooth those sleeping. The satyr encourages the person on guard to sleep too. It is willing to watch over them. THe next morning the satyr is gone, but a fresh breakfast has been made for them. They gain 10 temporary hit points from the relaxing sleep.

4) Hungy Bear: A sick and hungry brown bear lumbers quietly into camp looking for food. At any sign of danger it will flee. If the bear is treated with any level of sympathy it will become a loyal pet of the characters.

“But how can you KNOOOOOW you don’t like the food if you’ve never TRIIIIIIIIEEEEEEED it?????”

jayranwritesthings:

  • by looking at it to make texture predictions
  • smelling it to make taste predictions
  • poking at it with a fork to ascertain the flexibility and chewiness
  • considering its similarities to other foods I’ve disliked
  • considering its differences from other foods I’ve liked
  • knowing that there is an ingredient in it that I hate
  • trying to chop it with a knife and feeling the gristliness and hearing that telltale horrible creaking noise of gristle and noping right out of that situation
  • this is how humans naturally decided whether or not to eat unfamiliar foods in the wild thousands of years ago
  • our senses interact with each other to protect us, so your nose alerts you to an incoming bad taste before you put it in your mouth so you don’t end up eating the bad thing and dying
  • this is how we survived as a species
  • it is perfectly rational
  • it makes perfect sense
  • so stop

So this month @auronlu suggested that I do something World of Final Fantasy inspired since I’ve been having such a good time with it.

The revelation that Valefors are grown-up Cockatrices in this game made us both immediately imagine Valefor talking like the Cockatrices from FFXII. 😉

The mirages are also all very chatty and the idea of Yuna hanging out gossiping with her aeons when no one else is around is really endearing.

Oh. My. CHOCOBO.

This is really cute and a good portrait of both of them, but I think my brain just broke. (Also I don’t think I’ve ever complimented you for refining Valefor’s design to make her look more natural. I like Valefor, but the exaggerated anatomy was a bit odd.)

It’s a pity Jodie Whittaker has a Yorkshire accent instead of Cockney, because I could imagine this Valefor with her voice
