This was the crossword puzzle in the New York Times yesterday. 

Tausig’s crossword is a so-called Schrödinger puzzle, named for the physicist’s hypothetical cat that is at once both alive and dead. In a Schrödinger puzzle, select squares have more than one correct letter answer: They exist in two states at once. “Black Halloween animal,” for example, could be both BAT or CAT, yielding two different but perfectly correct puzzles. Only 10 such puzzles have now been published in Times history.

It’s the theme of Tausig’s puzzle, though, that makes it special. Four entries in Thursday’s crossword can include either an “F” or an “M.” Both are correct; neither is wrong. For example, “Part of a house” can be either ROOF or ROOM. The long “revealer” answer, tying those select entries together and spanning 11 squares smack-dab in the middle of the puzzle, is GENDER FLUID.

This puzzle, with “M”s and “F”s that aren’t fixed, is a masterful blend of subject and structure. “It potentially really evokes what gender fluidity is, which is not moving back and forth between two poles, but actually not being committed to either pole, and potentially existing in many states at different times,” Tausig said.

This is … really cool.

i never really thought of crossword puzzles as an art form, but like… this is art.

so for some ungodly reason tumblr staff decided it’d be a good idea to allow flashy gifs or incredibly bright images to be a background for the login screen. a lot of people i know are photosensitive and prone to headaches or other, worse things that can be caused by this. so naturally i wrote a small script to disable those completely. hopefully permanently.

you can find it here. you’ll need the browser extension/addon stylish for it to work, which you should be able to get from the website itself if i remember correctly. hope it helps someone o7

This is seriously so important. I suffer epilepsy and am extremly photosensitive, as I am sure a lot of other epileptics are. Please, spread this around, you could seriously save someone.

Hi everyone! I know this isn’t a funny gif post, but I’m extremely photosensitive and know that many others with fibro are as well. 

I’m not epileptic, but sharing for those who are.

What’s weird is that @staff clearly know that the things are harmful to a lot of people, and… that’s fine, that’s cool, we are 100% behind having our site cause seizures and migraines and so on, because the important part is that if you go to a page that doesn’t currently exist or try to log in, we get to… make you feel pain?

I honestly don’t get it.

A couple of PSAs:

  1. Stylish is now spyware. Use Stylus (Firefox, Chrome) instead.
  2. You can also block these backgrounds with an adblocker. Add these to your blacklist: “www.tumblr.com##.visible.fullscreen-background” and “www.tumblr.com###fullscreen_post_bg”. This will also remove the flashing gif backgrounds from the “page not found” screen.

hey get your flu shot if youre able to. last year 80,000 people in the us died from the flu and its complications and thats literally the highest its been in four decades. just because u “never get the flu” doesn’t mean that you aren’t putting others at risk. dont be silly. get ur flu shot. practically every insurance plan pays for it at 100%, and its usually under $40 out of pocket. blease

just wanted to say, as a former pharmacy tech, you can be a carrier of
the flu virus without showing symptoms, so as said above, just because you never get the flu, doesnt mean youre not being an ass for not getting the flu vaccine. For fucks sake, you can even get it FREE(even without insurance) a lot of the time not even needing to deal with insurance. now you may be asking why there are people giving it out for free, and barring the obvious of some people cant afford to pay for it, its because there are assholes that wont go and get it because they A) dont think they need it. B) dont want to pay for it. C) both of the above! if you guessed C youre right! being safe because of “herd immunity” doesnt mean you dont need to get it because everyone else is getting it. it means get off your ass and go get it. 

Now that the rant is out of the way, if you’re looking to try and get it for free here are some tips:

if youre a student on a college campus(and some highschools), contact your health/wellness center and ask if they are giving out the flu vaccine, if not they can probably direct you to somewhere that is.

This flu season Target/cvs pharmacies were offering the shot for free(im not sure if this is still the case, but its easy enough to call around and find out)

A lot of the free clinics offer a free flu shot while they have the supply to do so.

Many employers require a flu shot and generally will reimburse you for the cost.

This is only handful of ways to get your shot. there are plenty of other options.

Just. Go. Get. Your. Damn. Flu. Shots. People.

addition to the above! last time i heard CVS/target was giving ppl $5 gift cards for getting their flu shots. unless you are allergic to the flu vaccine there is literally no excuse to not get this shot. please protect the ppl around you
