The party, pointing to an NPC that the DM never intended to be a recurring character: That’s My Child Now
@caffeinatedwriters Now you gotta write them a quest where they get the chance to bring him back!!
The first dungeon-boss that my group was meant to just quickly kill at the end of their very first session, they saved from death. Repeatedly. She’s now a reoccurring character who despite the fact that she is defs evil and showing no signs of redemption (yet) they keep. Saving?? So I guess I’d better write a redemption arc?
I love your players so much. I’m imagining Local Villain turning good mainly out of confusion because why they save me tho????
We’ve adopted our first small villain to the party as a DMPC. During the interrogation he suddenly bursts into tears, says the villaining was his last desperate try to unfuck his life and now we can do whatever we want with him, cause he’s done. He’s out of ideas and his life is still fucked up. The whole party went all “aaaaww there there pat pat poor thing” and now he’s our token pretty boy and an in-game DM’s snarky voice.
We found a 20 ft cube of gelatinous acid in the underdark. He wanted to see sunlight. He was perfect. So he became part of our party. He’s slow so he always follows behind us and every now and again he has a few new skeletons inside of him of the fools that tried to sneak up behind us. He’s my favorite.
I love this. I support you and your sun-loving acid dog
Of all the aberrations that have squirmed their way from outside time and space onto the material plane, there are none quite like the Mimic. It is certainly not the greatest of them, nor the most powerful (either in raw strength or intellect). Yet it is (at least to the average adventurer) one of the most feared, and rightly so.
The thing that sets Mimics apart from most of their alien brethren is that most aberrations come into our world with little to no understanding of it; or, if they do comprehend our ways, they simply do not care. Creatures like the Gibbering Mouther, the Grick, or the Choker – these fiends hunt, kill and feed almost mindlessly, making full use of their evolved weaponry but without the slightest concern for the humanity that fears them.
The Mimic, however, is more insidious. It has learned the habits of humans – particularly the foolhardy breed known as “adventurers”, who are fond of going out into the world in groups of only five or six – and is capable of… well, mimicking any object that might serve to disguise itself until prey draws close, ensuring a quick death to any who fall into its trap.
Some have claimed that the Mimic is like any other camouflaged animal – that its transformations are merely opportunistic, dumb imitations of form simply to hide from prey. But seasoned hunters swear differently; that within each Mimic’s actions there lurks a streak of genuine malevolence, or, even worse, dark humour. What’s more, survivors of one Mimic attack will often become obsessed by the threat of another – every pot, chest and chair becomes a potential threat that must be investigated thoroughly. More than a few such adventurers have descended into madness.

This one’s inspired by the various breeds of octopus that can alter the colour of their skin (as well as – seemingly – its very texture) to more effectively camouflage themselves. There’s a specific breed known as the Mimic Octopus that adds another layer to this subterfuge by actively pretending to be other creatures – poisonous sea snakes, flatfish and lionfish to name a few examples – in order to scare off predators.
I spent a while trying to grade the transition from tentacles into wood so that it was sufficiently smooth. I’m not sure if I like it 100% but I at least enjoy looking at it for the colours right now! For some reason I really like using blues and purples for wood.
This is the reveal of this ridiculousness during their game
Please watch this reveal video it’s kickass

ROLL INTIATIVE
The hobbits go last in the initiative order
Cave troll appears at the start of round 3 of the combat and everyone is like FFFFFUUUUUUU
Aragorn: I throw my sword at it! DM: Okay, well, your longsword doesn’t have the “thrown” property– Aragorn: *rolls* nat 20! DM: *SIGH* Boromir: Nice
Gandalf, clearly playing Angry Birds on his phone and not paying attention: I hit it with my quarterstaff. Everyone Else: You’re a WIZARD!! Gandalf: Uh, 18 to hit? 3 bludgeoning damage. DM: *sigh* Okay, the cave troll misses you with its attacks, Legolas, so it’s your turn now. Legolas: I want to climb onto its shoulders and shoot it in the head with my longbow. DM: … *SIGH*
Sam took Tavern Brawler and is proficient with improvised weapons.
Hey wanna hear the most telling thing about me as a 17 year old dnd nerd
I made up a villian for a campaign that was a black dragon and his name was Oblivion of Roses.
Ok so our man Oblivion of Roses lived in a bog and pickled dead bodies in swamp water as black dragons do, but he was like… fancy about it.
His lair was this big network of caves that were half submerged under the swamp, and the entrance was hidden by like throng vines and liechens that had bright red flowers all over them, hence the moniker “of roses.” He had red flowers all over the place because he liked fancy things.
He had levels of Bard and would polymorph himself into an elf or human A LOT and had a whole band of goblins and lizard folk he’d like force to play like cabaret music for him all the time and they were like… basically his slaves because if they fucked up he’d like kill them and they were terrified of him.
Here is a simple rendition of a common scene inside Chateu Oblivion of Roses
can randomly generate just about ANYTHING. awesome for dms
Tabletop Audio: background music and sound effects for the ambience.
PCGen – a character creation program that handles all the tricky and tedious parts of building characters, including NPCs.
d20pfsrd.com – all the free information you would ever need to play Pathfinder, an alternative to D&D
