Okay heads up for all Americans eligible to vote:

The Supreme Court just issues a ruling allowing Ohio and other states to purge voters from their election registration rolls due to their failure to cast a ballot in previous elections.

This is a major victory for the Trump administration and the GOP, and a direct consequence of the Supreme Court being stacked with more conservative judges (the votes were 5-4). This is also a huge part of what Trump/the GOP were counting on to save them in the 2018 midterm elections, which is where Democrats have been hoping to take back a majority in the House, giving them more power to combat Trump’s abuses of power and Republican legislation.

What this means is YOU CAN NOT ASSUME THAT YOU ARE REGISTERED for the 2018 elections, just because you SHOULD be. Thanks to this decision, red states can purge voters’ registration based on their not having cast a ballot in even just previous federal elections, NOT just the national Presidential elections. Effectively, if you haven’t voted in previous senate races or for congressional representatives in the past few years, that’s all they need now to say you’re no longer registered and need to register again.

They’re deliberately counting on people assuming they’re still registered and so not checking until after registration deadlines have passed, or showing up to vote this November and only then finding out they’re no longer registered, when its too late to do a damn thing about it.

And this is absolutely targeted at marginalized communities, low income voters, disabled voters, and basically anyone who simply can’t always AFFORD to keep on top of every federal election and show up to vote in every senate race, etc. Which not so coincidentally happen to be all the communities and voters who have the most to gain from Democratic victories in the 2018 midterms and are the least likely to cast votes for GOP candidates at this point.

This was absolutely a calculated effort aimed specifically at keeping the GOP in power with a majority control of the government come November, and unfortunately, it has a DAMN good chance of accomplishing just that if it goes by unacknowledged. I’m not looking to alarm or panic anyone, simply to say:

If you are a registered voter in a red state at this point, please please please do not take your registered status as assumed. Check on your registration status, look up all relevant voter registration deadlines for your state and district, CIRCLE THAT SHIT ON YOUR CALENDAR, and check your registration status AGAIN right before those deadlines pass, so you can be sure of it before its too late to do anything about it til the next voting cycle.

Yikes

Reblog this shit right now

Here’s a Twitter thread with resources for voters in every state to check on their registration status: https://twitter.com/AnaMardoll/status/1006221580458790912

Make sure you check it periodically because the newest voter roll purges likely haven’t happened yet.

Reblogging this with a hope for Americans to turn this around for the better. Good luck, guys!

Help your friends and neighbors and family, too.

Remember that old slogan, “If voting changed anything they’d make it illegal”? Well, they’re making it illegal.

Voting is war. Fight for your vote, and for the votes of your fellow citizens. Organize. Resist. Fight. Vote.

New study projects a stunning drop in 2018 millennial voter turnout in battleground states

  • The 2016 presidential election — and its outcome — may have given plenty of Americans a new sense of urgency when it comes to civics.
  • But a new study projects that 40 million Americans who voted last year will likely not show up at the polls for the 2018 midterms.
  • And that two-thirds of those “drop-off” voters will be millennials, unmarried women and people of color.
  • The report, just out from the Voter Participation Center and Lake Research Partners, “Comparing the Voting Electorate in 2012-2016 and Predicting 2018 Drop-off,” notes that many of those expected not to cast a ballot next year live in key battleground states like Arizona, Nevada, Florida and Ohio. Young people in America, REGISTER TO VOTE AND GET TO THE POLLS NEXT YEAR

THIS MATTERS

YOUR VOTE MATTERS SO MUCH OKAY

Just look at the difference young people getting out and voting made in the UK general election this year…young voters CAN make a POSITIVE DIFFERENCE by getting out and voting

And I know this isn’t a presidential election but it is in some ways EVEN MORE IMPORTANT

Because the president can’t do anything without congress and the senate on his side…but likewise, if the Republicans get a majority it means it will be easier for that disgusting sack of stinking dog-vomit Donald Trump and his party of traitors and criminals to push through the DISGUSTING things they want to try and inflict on the country and its people

Get out and vote democrat next year and keep the Republicans from getting a blank check to try and push through their bigoted, evil bullshit

I’m pretty sure the biggest barrier to young people voting isn’t not caring, it’s not knowing.

Am I registered? Shit, who knows? I’ve moved five times in the last four years. I think I registered, but that was a year ago, did I change districts since then? Where even are the polling places in this town? What are their hours? I know I submitted a registration, but did they get it? I didn’t get a confirmation. Did they lose my form? Am I even eligible? Who knows? Oh well, I’m sure I can always register in the days leading up to the – whoops, there’s a deadline and it’s already gone by.

This is one of those civic skills that you would really think would be taught in high school, and – surprise! – it isn’t.

So here’s how to check which district you’re in and who your rep is.

Here’s how to find out if you’re registered.

Here are the deadlines for when to register.

Here’s how to register, if it turns out you’re not.

Here’s how to find local polling places.

Of course, all of this – in the way of Tumblr, and the internet more generally – will be lost to the vagaries of cyberspace by the time November rolls around. So hey: tag it with “voting reference” and you’ll always be able to find it again.

Boosting because us Millenials are nothing but fueled by spite, and blowing this projection out of the water would be delicious

Vote! find out if you’re registered, register, and THEN GO VOTE.

I’ll be voting, and I’m a poll worker so I hope to see you there if you’re in my district. I’ll be wearing a nubby brick-red hand-knit sweater and I have an undercut because that’s how Gen X roll, but I wanna see my Millenial friends out there voting, too.

If you don’t like mass migration, then you’re really not going to like what happens when global warming causes widespread desertification in equatorial countries.

If only there was some sort of accord wherein wealthy countries agreed to spend money in order to improve the infrastructure of equatorial countries such that those regions remain as habitable as possible.

Perhaps we could all meet somewhere, say Paris, in order to reach such an accord. In this way, migration can be minimized for decades to come.

She got arrested some 5 minutes after they posted something leaked anonymously, and due to the case being filed under the Espionage Act, she’s not allowed to even really present her case to a jury in any meaningful way. It’s fucked and needs to be talked about more

It’s also a level of elitism and classism and ethnic purification and a whole lot of jazz because not everyone will be able to pay these fees and those who can’t will just have to suffer and then America would only be gaining the more affluent of the bunch

Does anyone know if there’s any kind of fund to donate to these families?????

There is! They’ve been collecting since they’ve started, help donate!

A local union leader has vowed that a barricade will remain up at the Compass Minerals salt mine in Goderich, Ont., until contract negotiations resume.

“Nobody is coming through until we get back to the table as far as I can see,” said Gary Lynch, president of Unifor Local 16-0. “Unless they bring a tank down here, I ain’t going anywhere,”

More than 350 unionized workers at the mine have been on strike for about 10 weeks.

The picket line turned into a barricade Wednesday night, because the striking workers said they were frustrated by a lack of progress with management.

“They’re going by in their vehicles laughing at us because they have a contingency of workers doing our work. There’s no reason to get back to the table,” said Lynch.

And we are just hearing about it?

We’re just hearing about it now because:

1.) Its about Canada. Nobody pays attention to Canada, even the Canadian media doesn’t devote that much coverage to issues like this.

2.) This is a labour rights issue. Something that the corporate mainstream media is reluctant to cover in any detail.

Which is why Social Media is so important.  Also Canadians are very helpful with getting things in the States to a wider audience, its up to us to return the favor.

Thanks for the support. 🙂

If anything running this blog has taught me, its that widely Canadian issues are ignored even if relatively popular blogs like this one regularly post about them.

Here’s hoping stories like this one and others get some more exposure.

YouTube faces paying billions to music stars after copyright vote

Say goodbye to Youtube, say hello – again – to another age of illegal uploads and downloads.

If it all goes sideways, the people are the biggest losers, especially the smaller content producers and those who follow them. Fan videos, reaction videos, even those allegedly protected under fair use, will likely be eliminated or challenged.

I think it’s important for users to know, however, that it is the services themselves being directly penalised – not the users.  So if you made a fan video of an Ed Sheeran song, you’re not going to be targeted, the service you uploaded it to is.  I’ve seen too many posts coming out of Europe stating they’ll delete their blogs for fear of being sued over the content. No. Tumblr could be sued, not you (and that could mean the end of Tumblr).

This could get very ugly. Not that the Guardian or other UK papers give a shit. They keep burying it in their tech pages – if they discuss it at all.  And US media isn’t covering it at all from what I’ve seen, so if you’re angry that US users aren’t discussing it or the UK even, it’s because no one really knows about it.

aight so european leaders got together to make decisions about the refugee situation and the bottom line is 1) refugees are gonna be detained outside of europe, 2) the detainment centers are actually named “kontrollierte zentren” in german which is not ominous or in incredibly bad taste at all, 3) private rescuers are gonna be charged for rescuing drowning refugees, 4) we pay countrues such as turkey or libya a lot of money to keep refugees out of europe, 5) outer european borders will be strengthened and frontex (border control) will receive more funding

so in short uhhh europe decided on killing and locking up more refugees; fun!

Please don’t ignore this.

The European Union is killing refugees through neglect, and planning to put them in prison camps in Turkey, Libya, Morocco etc. If you wanna help, you can donate for example to: Mission Lifeline sea rescue, HelpRefugees, RefugeeSupport, the UN Refugee Agency, Solidarity Now in Greece, Open Migration in Italy, BetterPlace in Germany, Care4Calais in France and Belgium, RefugeeAction in the UK.

SupportRefugees lists ways to become active as a volunteer across Europe.

Support FRONTEXIT to let European leaders know we do not condone their border politics!

Keep informed and keep vigilant, for example on Amnesty International or Human Rights Watch. Please spread this and add any good links you have. Thank you!

Something I drew for this year! I’m going to reblog this every two weeks until November because I really do think that this is important.

Here’s a reminder again! Also, because of the supreme court ruling along party lines to uphold voter registration purges in Ohio, take this also as a reminder to check your registration status

This twitter thread links to how to check your registration in every state!

After this week, I don’t think I can overstate how incredibly important it is to vote this November. There are primaries in several states all the way up through September, so look out for those, too!

Check your registration, check your needed ID, look into voting by mail or voting if you’re overseas!
